Apple’s new iOS 10 has become the talk of the tech world after the new iPhone software was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) this week.
Scheduled to be available to users in the fall, iOS 10 boasts a slew of new features. The most important for technology enthusiasts is the new Home app, a single destination spot for users to manage all products supporting HomeKit, like HomeKit-enabled light switches, motorized shades, and door locks.
Smart home products supporting HomeKit have been rolled out over the course of the last few years since Apple announced HomeKit in 2014. To date there are a few dozen on the market. Previously, users had to rely on third party apps to control their smart home products, which was less than convenient as many apps don’t have the same set of features or even support all the same smart devices.
The new Home app should simplify things a bit. It includes a favorites section and support for new HomeKit accessories like cameras. Perhaps best of all, the app is built into the iPhone’s Control Center, so all home controls are a quick swipe up from the bottom of the screen. No more hunting from page to page to find the right app.
In addition, new geofencing support will allow users to trigger certain devices automatically whenever they change location. For example, you can set your lights to turn on when you leave work or tell your AC to turn on when you arrive at home.
HomeKit was also added to Siri’s capabilities via Apple TV. Apple says to expect the Home app to be available on Apple Watch in the fall.
