A few years ago, NFL football legend John Elway was new to the whole concept of home control, home automation, smart lighting and other home technologies. But that didn’t stop the retired Denver Broncos superstar from hiring a local home systems integration firm to install an architectural lighting system into his Denver home. The Vantage system that was added to this residence a few years ago gave Elway and his wife, Paige, a newfound convenience of being able to push one button on one of several Vantage keypads to command lights throughout the house brighten and dim to pre-determined levels to complement a variety of daily activities like bedtime, relaxation, cooking, and exercising. In this home they made sure to incorporate an All Off button. “I was taught as a kid to always turn the lights off when I left the room,” Elway says. “My mom did a good job of getting that through my head and I became a stickler about it as an adult. The Vantage system lets my entire family press one button to sweep through the entire house to turn off every light.”
The simplification of control and the energy savings afforded by the system was such a big hit with the Elways that they recently decided to add an inFusion system to their 15,000-square-foot home in Couer d’Alene, Idaho, as it was undergoing cosmetic renovations. “We were so happy with the system in our Denver home, that we couldn’t imagine not having it in this home,” says Elway. “And we really didn’t even want change much, keeping the setup much the same, but adding in a few party and entertainment modes.”
Because the Elways knew exactly what they wanted, all they really needed to do was find a Vantage dealer in the area. Based in Post Falls, Idaho, Acme Electric was nearby and as long-time Vantage dealers were extremely familiar with the process of design and installation an inFusion system. Since the Elways wanted a near carbon copy of the lighting scenes used in their Denver house, the time required of Acme to program the system was minimal compared to what it would have been had they started from scratch. “We were given the go-ahead to download the inFusion program used at the Denver house, made some minor adjustments, and were good to go,” says Mike Green, Acme Electric programmer and installer. Streamlining the project even more was the fact that Green was able to do 80 percent of the programming off-site at the Acme office.
To complete the project, Acme swapped each of the home’s nearly 100 lights switches for Vantage keypads. Using the system at Elway’s Denver home as a template, they order engraved buttons for each keypad to eliminate all guesswork.
Although the style of the Elways’ two homes are drastically different from each other, the control of the lighting is so similar that it’s been a breeze for John and Paige to master the system. And thanks Vantage’s new multi-home feature in its mobile app, they are even able to stay in complete control of both systems when they’re on the road or on vacation. From a tablet or a smartphone, they can prepare either house for their arrival.
